Opened in December 2008 Baraza was the first truly “five-star” hotel in Zanzibar and is the most lavish on the island. Grandeur, elegance and historical heritage are the themes that run throughout the hotel experience. Even the atmosphere is a little bit more formal than at many other local resorts.
The evocation of Zanzibar’s heritage does not imply any compromises to the modern comforts: the rooms have plasma televisions hidden behind antique wardrobes and there is a DVD library, full business facilities—and even underwater music in the pool.
About thirty solar-powered villas are filled with beautiful fabrics, hand-carved furniture, and brass lanterns, and feature large bathrooms with luxury fittings, a spacious terrace, and a private plunge pool.
The word baraza means “bench”, and benches in Zanzibar are typically the focal point of community life. The hotel draws from this concept with the plethora of places to relax, Swahili-inspired activities and efforts promoting local culture.
The water sports center is excellent, and much equipment is included. Kite surfing lessons can be organized at the hotel and scuba diving/snorkeling at the next door Breezes. On-site is a tennis court and fitness center, as well as the sumptuous Frangipani Spa.
Every week the hotel runs a Swahili day, promoting the local culture through the food and the excellent evening entertainment.
