This urban resort with a fabulous spa occupies a prime riverfront spot in the heart of Thailand’s capital. The hotel was designed by Jean-Michel Gathy (known for the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore or the Chedi Muscat in Oman). For the Four Seasons in Bangkok, the celebrated hotel architect envisioned a series of integrated indoor and outdoor spaces, bamboo-fringed courtyards, gardens, cascading waterfalls, and mirror infinity pools extending into the river. Following its recent entry into the competitive hospitality scene of the Thai capital, Capella has gained a reputation as one of the most attractive luxury hotels in Bangkok. And no wonder. The level of luxury and excellent amenities and facilities make Capella a destination hotel. One of the two gourmet restaurants is helmed by a Michelin-starred chef. The celebrated NY-based design firm, Yabu Pushelberg, is mainly responsible for Park Hyatt Bangkok’s concept of swanky interiors and a “private residence” atmosphere. Attractive, stylish, and luxury-loving, SO/Bangkok is defined by its design. It delights with a daring mix of bold ideas and luxurious style that mixes French and Thai influences (starting with the staff outfits designed by Christian Lacroix). In-vogue art fills the eye-catching ninth-floor lobby, and postmodern sculptures adorn many other places in the hotel. All this stands in surprising harmony with the toned-down guest rooms and suites, designed around the “fundamental elements” from the Chinese Wuxing philosophy. The charming SO Spa’s decor is in Wood theme, with suspended tree trunks and wooden slats resembling a forest. There are five dining and drinking places, and the hotel and the lobby lounge doubles as Mixo, a cocktail hangout. Chocolab, a gourmet chocolate boutique, was our favorite to re-visit. COMO Metropolitan Bangkok feels far from Bangkok’s traffic yet only steps away from the Central Business District’s shopping, restaurants, and nightlife — thanks to its quiet location in the Sathorn neighborhood. The simple décor of the interiors combines browns and white tones, and its quality oozes comfort and exclusive luxury, complemented by state-of-the-art amenities. The pool, cantilevered from the 25th floor of the building, is the hotel’s standout feature. From certain angles, it appears as if the water is suspended in the air, and for the swimmers, the pool promises vertigo-inducing views. The Okura has excellent dining options, and its Spa offers varied massage sessions with a menu that includes Japanese ceremonies.

The hotel’s creators preserved and enhanced the neoclassical building’s original patina. The hotel’s ten guest rooms are unique in size and layout but always spacious and richly decorated. Freestanding bathtubs serving as centerpieces in the guest rooms offer an ideal Instagram set-up. The facilities don’t match big chain hotels (e.g., there is no pool, no hotel bar), but the service, friendly and personalized, matches the ethos of a small-scale boutique hotel.

The youthful, over-the-top glamour and strong design ideas we know W Hotels for can all be found in the supremely elegant W Bangkok. The visually arresting style, full of pop culture references, postmodern quirkiness, and a movie-backdrop feel, is aimed at fashion-aware guests. Everything here has the trademark W approach, from design choices, such as black marble walls and striking lighting, to the background dance music that welcomes guests and follows them through the public spaces. The rooms and suites are much quieter, though, and are focused on polished luxury. Anantara Siam’s stupendous lobby was designed to impress, with its grand columns and high ceilings adorned by silk panels. But the hotel also wows with traditionally-inspired interiors and architecture, curated art, and lush gardens. With tropical landscaping and a prominent swimming pool, the green hotel grounds do a lot of work to create the atmosphere of an urban resort, even if the hotel’s address is smack in the corporate heart of Bangkok, with easy access to big-city attractions. Guests can choose from 354 oversized rooms and suites, but there are also eight exquisite garden houses.
